At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
