Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
